Pharmacy Technician Certification News
Effective November 1, 2009, the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy recognized the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT) as an accredited organization for certified pharmacy technician testing. ICPT offers the ExCPT exam, which is recognized by the National Organization for Competency Assurance and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores as a psychometrically sound pharmacy technician certification exam.
Technicians in the state of Alabama now have another option for gaining certified pharmacy technician (CPhT) status. For more information on the ExCPT exam you can visit the ICPT website at www.nationaltechexam.org.

Report of the 2009 House of Delegates Annual Meeting

The APA House of Delegates held its annual meeting June 23, 2009 in Sandestin, FL. Minutes were approved from the 2008 HOD meeting. 2010-2011 Officer nominations were presented and a report was presented of actions taken from the 2008 annual meeting.

The APA Selection Committee reported that Mark Conradi, Ron Pate and Donna Yeatman are the three nominees for the chain position on the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy. These names will be submitted to the Governor for his appointment.

RESOLUTION #1
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Executive Committee of the APA Board of Trustees shall appoint a special committee comprised of APA pharmacist members to draft legislation that would grant appropriate prescriptive authority to licensed pharmacists.

RESOLUTION #2
BE IT RESOLVED, the Alabama Pharmacy Association shall request the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy amend regulations to require all new pharmacy technician applicants attain national certification prior to registration. Pharmacy technicians currently registered in Alabama at the time of this change shall be allowed a period of time to obtain certification with length of said period being determined by the State Board.

BE IT RESOLVED, the Alabama Pharmacy Association shall request the schools of pharmacy located in Alabama to increase the amount of education focused on impairment and chemical dependence of pharmacists.

RESOLUTION #4
BE IT RESOLVED, the Alabama Pharmacy Association shall commend the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy on passage of legislation that will allow for the hiring of additional pharmacy inspectors. APA shall request that any additional pharmacy inspectors hired by the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy be registered pharmacists.

Insurance Programs

  • APA Health Insurance Open Enrollment
    October 1-31, 2010 is Open Enrollment for the Alabama Pharmacy Association’s health insurance program*. This enrollment period is for employees that did not apply for group health coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield within 60 days of their employment date, need to add family members to their existing coverage or would like to change their current coverage. The effective date for all applications received during Open Enrollment will be October 1, 2010.
    This enrollment period decreases the waiting period for pre-existing from 18 months to 12 months unless you have had prior coverage. If you have had prior coverage, that time of coverage will be applied toward the pre-existing waiting period as long as the break in coverage is no more than 63 days.

  • BCBS Changes In Dependent Coverage
    Effective June 1, 2010, BCBS is extending dependent benefits on your underwritten health and dental plan to dependents up to age 26 provided the employee provides over one-half support for such dependents. All other eligibility requirements for dependents under your plan remain the same.
    Any dependents who would have normally cancelled effective June 1 for turning age 25 have already received their cancellation notification from BCBS. BCBS will send these dependents a letter letting them know that they will automatically re-enroll them. There is no need for them to complete a new application.
    Effective June 1, 2010, your eligible dependents are:
    • Your spouse (of the opposite sex)
    • An unmarried child under age 18
    • An unmarried child age 18 up to 26 who depends on you for over one-half support
    • An incapacitated child who is not able to support himself and who depends on you for support, if the incapacity occurred before age 18 (or before age 26 when the child was dependent on you for over one-half support)
